ROOT OVER ROCK is a series of canvases depicting the fig trees of the Waverton Peninsula. The works describe the symbiotic relationship between the penetrating ficus root system and the beds of Sydney sandstone. The inspiration is taken directly from real trees sketched on my walks in the area. I like to draw, it’s the way I start any of my art projects. The final works begin with charcoal outlines and contours of roots and limbs, building volume and movement as if participating in a life-drawing class. My palette is restricted to earthy ochres and weathered neutrals, oils mixed into and over crackle medium and cold wax. Colour and texture are built onto the canvas with brush and palette knife. My organic charcoal line returns at the end to redefine structure and form.
