JOSEPHINE JOSEPHSEN
SYDNEY-BASED AUSTRALIAN ARTIST
BA.INT.DES.SCA; BFA.NAS
I have always expressed myself through drawing and painting and believe that making images is the native language of the imagination. My training in architecture and interior design is a natural influence in my work, actively observing, analyzing and recording reality past and present. Recently, 2013-2015, I completed a BA (Fine Arts) at NAS in order to extend my art knowledge and practice. As part of my commitment to being a "professional" artist, I set up my own studio at Artarmon www.punchstreetstudio.com and fitted out a gallery space for exhibition of my own works and hire to other artists. I "do" art every day, whether plein-air sketching in my local area, travel sketching, gallery visits, workshops in the studio, printmaking or developing my own series of paintings.
I like to draw. It's the way I start any of my art projects. My preferred mediums are charcoal and ink for tonal work and oil for colour. I have workshopped in Florence and Siena in gold leaf and egg tempera technique and enjoy the technical side of preparing grounds and pigments with historical reference.
My time at NAS gave me a solid foundation in art history and theory and an appreciation of contemporary art forms. I now believe that there is nothing original in art. The images we are producing as artists are the result of information gathered in our lifetime, modified by input from others and assembled in our imaginations. The art then, is in how we present these images, the possibilities are endless and the work begins. I agree with Chuck Close who said: "Inspiration is for amateurs- the rest of us just show up and get to work".
