Collection: Vernacular Photography (Snapshots)

“Vernacular”, the common or ordinary. Vernacular photography, or photography made by the everyday person for personal use, not as artistic expression, has gained popularity in art collections and museums in recent years. When Eastman Kodak introduced the Brownie box camera in 1900 they brought inexpensive photography to the everyday household and the public loved it. The ability to capture family memories and events had immense allure that still consumes us. Vintage snapshots are not just “irrelevant memories” of people unknown. They show us a hint at life and culture of past days. This window to the past is what entices collectors, and has started catching the eyes of museums and historical collections worldwide.
