This graphite drawing portrays a young woman in a side profile, with a ship porthole visible beside her. Through the porthole, one can see a man and his dog, the man is bidding farewell. The dog, though incidental to the story, was included as a personal tribute to my love for them. The man and dog are depicted as small figures, as they are in the far distance. The woman is adorned with a pearl earring, a homage to the famous painting by Vermeer.
Her eyes, specifically her pupils, possess an almost anime-like quality, conveying the idea that this could all be an illusion or simply a figment of her imagination. She is dressed in a delicate lace dress, her hair styled elegantly, and adorned with expensive pearl earrings. All this could just be purely a dream.
Why she is not looking at the man or waving goodbye, but instead, her gaze is fixated ahead? What is the emotion on her face?
The drawing was primarily done using graphite pencils. However, for the background, graphite powder was used to achieve a smooth, powdery finish that contrasts with the more textured feel of the main subject.
