Pele: Princess of the Volcano emerges from John McCaskill’s Blind Contour period, where spontaneous line became a vessel for mythic and elemental force. In this work, Pele — the Hawaiian goddess of fire — is envisioned through layers of charcoal, acrylic, oil, and Sekishu paper. Her visage radiates in fiery yellows and molten reds, while black contour lines echo lava flows coursing across the land.
At once fierce and luminous, Pele embodies both destruction and renewal. As “princess of the volcano,” she stands as a guardian of transformation, her presence reminding us of the fragile balance between beauty and power, chaos and creation.
