Primal Spirit was created in 2002 during John McCaskill’s Blind Contour period, a body of work defined by spontaneous line and layered surfaces. Drawn without looking at the canvas, the figure’s form emerges through an unbroken web of charcoal strokes that entwine with botanical, root-like shapes.
The earthy palette of ochres, violets, and grays — layered with Sekishu paper, acrylic, and oil — intensifies the tension between structure and wildness. The result is a portrait that feels ancient and immediate, fragile yet fierce, embodying both human presence and elemental force.
