Created in 2001, Cybill is part of John McCaskill’s early series of blind-contour portraits, here depicting actress Cybill Sheppard. The figure is rendered in sweeping, unbroken black lines layered over a Pollock-inspired field of splattered pigment. Accents of blue and red highlight facial features, while the raw contour line destabilizes and reassembles the figure in a manner recalling Cubist explorations of form. Merging the gestural energy of Abstract Expressionism with the fragmented clarity of Braque’s portraits, Cybill embodies McCaskill’s search for immediacy, vulnerability, and abstraction within the human form.
