Statement
John Batchine's work discusses the unique experience of a first generation Filipino-American living in Los Angeles. John translates this to his work, using industrial materials which are cheaper, but carry a heavier weight when recontextualized, resembling Filipino cuisine, often using discarded ingredients to make the most out of what is easily accessible. Despite being made with inexpensive ingredients, it still sustains and nourishes. The durability reflects the perseverance of immigrants and people of color chasing the so-called American dream in a country that is continually looking to improve.
