My art journey started when I was very young, I drew and created to escape my world of conflict. I went on to complete a Degree of Visual Communication at the Qld College of Art (1978-1982).
My skills found their place in the Theatre, Film and TV Industries in the Art Department doing Set Design, Art Direction and Stand-by Props here in Australia from 1983 - 2021.
I have since Semi-retired from the Entertainment Industry, and I am now using my time to create Art.
Statement
About my Work.
John likes to create abstract expression, developing his own technique, in isolation from the applicable rules and principles, combining the real and digital world. John is traditionally trained and skilled having completed a Visual Arts Degree in 1982, and working in Profession Positions in Film Production Art Departments for 40 years. He likes to create emotive compositions that inspire your curiosity leaving you desiring more from the visual.
John creates abstract images because of the challenges in composition energy, and the fact that once created they are never boring to the eye. Although he is a "digital neo creator", he approaches digital techniques with provision in mind and does not want them to overwhelm him and treats them as a tool, "new world media tools". His works have common roots, they grow out of a handful of his acrylic paintings and graphics that have been digitized and then processed using various digital tools.
Their artistic form is constantly evolving, reflecting the development of his personal artistic sensitivity, sense of beauty, understanding of aesthetics and technical skills. He finds inspiration in the very process of creating; the result always surprises him.
Realising his artistic vision, the artist creates images that reflect his passionate aesthetic search for worlds and beings different from those that surround him - he creates and constantly develops a world of colourful visual abstract expressions, that move, change and evolve; giving the viewer a sense of arriving at where they began, igniting a feeling unique to them.
“The artist’s technical problem is how to transform the material with which he works back into the sphere of the spirit. This two-way transformation proceeds from metaphysical perceptions, for metaphysics is the search for the essential nature of reality. And so artistic creation is the metamorphosis of the external physical aspects of a thing into a self-sustaining spiritual reality. Such is the magic act which takes place continuously in the development of a work of art. On this and only on this is creation based.”
--Hans Hofmann, The Search for the Real
The quote above says everything about my own philosophy of art in a very succinct paragraph. However, Digital Art has unique characteristics. It realizes the dream of the Impressionists, to paint with light, and allows us to create works with more vivid colours than was possible before digital art. The colour space of “natural” media was always dulled by the binders and admixtures necessary to hold the paint or chalk together. My digital art paintbrush is a pressure sensitive Wacom stylus, and my digital paints are made of light in all the visible colours of the spectrum. I also use photography to capture my traditionally worked pieces of art. These are my building blocks in combination with my digitally creative tools.
