I create a range of work that is inspired by my joy, curiosity and awe of nature. It is a synthesis of art, design, environmental science, culture and craft.
MessageThe toothed dentate margin (the edge of the leaf with teeth that point outward) visually creates a scalloped edge. Using the Japanese Shippo pattern (Shippo-tsunagi; 七宝つなぎ) as a cut detail connects Ligularia dentata to one native location of the species (Japan), as well as emphasizes this design element. The Shippo pattern consists of interlocking circles, symbolizing harmony and can appear as petals or stars. Shippo-tsunagi means “seven treasures,’’ referencing the seven treasures of Buddhism.
The horizontal band of pattern serves to divide the botanical information from the design intent, while also providing visual exploration of varying leaf coloration and the pattern.
The packet in the upper left includes loose fragments and additional leaves that were used for the cut pattern.
