Joan Affenit
FRISCO, Texas
Philly-born and Chicago-trained, Joan is a vibrant presence in the DFW arts community, showing her work in venues across North Texas.
MessageJoan was born and raised in Philadelphia, where her lifelong impulse to interpret the world through visual art first took root. She began formal painting studies in the Chicagoland area in the early 2000s, training for two decades under artist Enid Silverman and embracing Silverman’s deep affection for oil on canvas.
Frequent moves and extensive travel across Europe, Asia, and the United States broadened Joan’s understanding of the varied textures, colors, and rhythms of both humanity and the natural world. These experiences continue to shape her evolving artistic language. In recent years, she has expanded into new mediums and genres—including alcohol ink, abstract work, and mixed media—allowing her to explore fresh modes of expression.
As her relationship with the world shifts, so too does the trajectory of her art. Each new chapter in her life becomes a catalyst for transformation on the canvas, reflecting an ever-deepening dialogue between inner experience and the landscapes around her.
Statement
The canvas is my outlet—where I pour my responses to the world: awe, delight, amusement, worry, and outrage. I paint the moments that uplift me so they can be treasured, and I channel the difficult ones as a form of release, transforming them into visual statements that speak for themselves.
My work leans toward impressionism. Rather than replicate a reference image, I focus on the elements that move me—the light, the gesture, the emotion—allowing intuition to guide what stays and what falls away.
I paint what stirs me. Art is my instinctive language, the most natural way I express what I feel and how I see the world.
