I was born in London, the daughter of a professional commercial artist, and grew up in Sussex, where I walked the beaches and Downland countryside.
It was always going to be Art for me, and I studied Graphic Design, Illustration and History of Art for my Degree, followed by a PGCE in Art and Design Education.
After many years teaching in Secondary Education and running a successful Art Department, I then became an Art Education Consultant, supporting art education across all phases, and working with a huge variety of schools, colleges and universities.
Throughout my teaching career I continued my own professional practice in Illustration and Design, and then in Fine Art, especially as a painter.
I’m now delighted to be a full time professional artist, inspired especially by wild and open landscapes, like those around me in North Yorkshire, where I now live and work.
Statement
Ideas tend to come when I’m out walking; all the time, I’m noticing shapes and contrasts, atmosphere, layers and textures. Then back in the studio, I’ll start to play around with colour palettes, thumbnail sketches, notes, studies etc…until something grabs me that is worth developing.
I often begin with small intuitive paintings, which I use as jumping off points for later works.
Painting is a huge buzz and an enormous challenge; sometimes exciting and at other times frustrating, even scary!
My paintings are made slowly, building multiple layers and often scraping back and incising detail, before glazing over the top, to create a complex picture surface.
I write a monthly artist blog which comes out at the end of each month…available to read on my website.
My work is in both private and corporate collections in the UK and Europe.
