Opportunity presented itself. A way to connect my local community through a shared love of art, science, and deep appreciation of the natural beauty that surrounds us.
My ceramic artist BFF Barbe Ennis had seized on the concept of connecting art and science like a terrier. Then she enticed me to join her in connecting arts, scientific, educational, and community groups to a city-wide initiative called STAND UP for ART & SCIENCE. It took off, with exhibitions and readings and DNA sequencing and slime-making.
You can think of it as a form of cross-pollination that focuses on the things we locals have in common, more than the things that divide us: a belief in the power of art, the importance of science and rigorous scientific research, and the love of our beautiful city and the awesome natural resources that nurture and sustain us emotionally, visually, and literally.
