Passionflower is a composition written by Billy Strayhorn and recorded by Duke Ellington. The passionflower is so named due to the pattern of the stamens in the flower said to resemble the crown of thorns worn by Jesus. It is a common vine in the South, regarded as a weed and the fruit which is small, oval and and green-yellow is known as a "maypop" in the Southeast. In tropical countries the fruit is commonly used in fruit salads to add a sweet sour tang and color. In South Africa it was very common, known as a grenadilla. The flowers come in purples and blues as well as whites and pinks.
