In times of uncertainty and stress, Jessica turns to natural landscapes to turn off the noise of the world and heal the soul. Living with an anxiety disorder for as long as she can remember, she finds painting the best kind of therapy for redirecting her energies in a positive way, creating scenes she finds comforting and at times, playful. Little tranquil moments dominate her work where she paints in acrylics the beauty of botanicals, birds, landscapes and sunrises and sunsets. She strives to evoke the beauty and joy of her subjects through harmonious colors and capturing light to evoke a tranquil mood. Based in Northern Alberta, Canada, she is constantly inspired by her rural surroundings on the edge of the boreal forest.
Currently, Jessica teaches High School Art where she gets to experiment and share art techniques and inspiration with her students. She has attended numerous art workshops and eventually pursued fine arts courses at the University of Alberta in her Arts after degree. She is a current member of the Arts Society of Strathcona, having joined with the goal of exhibiting her art in public more. She has only been painting seriously since 2019 as a way to cope with the malaise of the pandemic and coping with family illness and anxiety. As an emerging/early career artist, she was humbled to place First Runner Up in Alberta's 2021 Art From the Unknown Online Competition and Gallery. She has also had her artwork recognized and featured in numerous online art exhibitions such as Fusion Art, Light, Space and Time and Artwrk Gallery.
Statement
“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.”
– Henry Ward Beecher
Just as there is certainty in nature's ability to ground and inspire, so there is in the act of painting which drives Jessica's Art practice. For Jessica, painting is therapeutic for coping with a life-long anxiety disorder. She draws inspiration for her art from moments of quiet beauty and wonder within the natural surroundings of her home in Northern Alberta. Natural subjects such as landscapes, birds, florals and other whimsical moments bring beauty, playfulness and calm; a necessary against the stress of a frenetic world at large. She finds comfort among her painted trees and flowers, gardens, fields and moon-lit skies. Using rich, cheerful acrylic colors to exude warmth and light, Jessica employs both softly-blended and textural brush strokes to suggest a dream-like quality to her landscapes. As an emerging artist, she continues to build a body of work that pays homage to nature's restorative powers.
