MessageStatement
Jenny Helbraun Abramson is a lens-based visual artist who uses self-portraiture and landscape photography to explore the mysteries of existence, the spiritual impulse, and our journey through the transformative demands of living. The landscape plays a key role in her artistic vision, as a salve to life’s trials and as a mirror for emerging wisdom.
Jenny’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections throughout the United States. Selections from her series, “Emergence,” received an honorable mention in the 19th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, and were exhibited in the award show at Fotonostrum Mediterranean House of Photography, Barcelona in 2023. A second series, “WaterWorld,” received an honorable mention in the 21st Julia Margaret Cameron Awards and were exhibited in the 2025 award show. Her series, "Journey of Grief," was exhibited at Viewpoint Photographic Art Center in 2022. Jenny’s work documenting the impacts of fire and flood in her home community have been exhibited widely in California and Hawaii, and appeared in the Fifth National Climate Assessment’s first Art X Climate online gallery.
Recent interests include creating photographic objects that document communal expressions of memory and loss, and artist’s books exploring her unique life experiences. “A Unique Motherhood,” a metaphorical retelling of her years raising a foster-adopt child, was selected for the Griffin Museum of Photography’s 2026 Handmade Photobook Exhibition.
Jenny grew up in the forests of upstate New York, but fell in love with the California landscape and moved to the Bay Area in 1983. She studied photography and printmaking at SUNY Purchase School of the Arts and at San Francisco State University. For 25 years, she has lived in a rural Sonoma County, California home that she built as a collaborative work of art with her late husband.
