I visited the Serpent Mound in Ohio in late February/early March sometime.
There was one family there, briefly, but for the most part I had the place to myself.
There were a few scraps of snow on the ground in the woods around the site, and some clouds blowing by, but the sun was out.
I sat there on my uncomfortable little folding chair trying to sketch the way the land seemed to undulate around me, and as I watched, the sun slowly moved across the sky.
I realized that the shadows of the tree branches were giving the 'serpent' its skin, and as they moved across it, it seemed to crawl across the hillside.
I suddenly felt very small and still. I envisioned the vast movements of the earth, the sun, and the stars all around, whirling through space. Very 'cosmic' indeed.
And then I returned to my frozen backside in that chair and packed up to leave.
