Jen Glover Riggs is an abstract painter and mixed media artist who is intrigued by the organic patterns and forms found in nature. Jen was a teacher for 18 years before discovering her love of color and form through abstract art. She is intrigued by organic forms in the natural world, and by processes that have a spontaneous, intuitive feel. She sees creation as a dance between herself and the paint as she both leads and follows, working intuitively and with purpose. For Jen, this is a study in the balance of chaos and control.
Jen’s paintings have been shown in juried fine art shows both locally and regionally, and her commission work has been featured in art collections nationally. Jen works extensively with art consultants both locally and nationally on hospitality projects for hotels and hospitals and other public spaces. In October 2020, she was awarded the Betty Barker award for best in show for her painting Breathe No. 1 at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan, CT. Jen is a member of the Artist Collective of Westport, the Ridgefield Guild of Artists and the Carriage Barn Art Center in New Canaan. Jen is also represented by the WIT Gallery in Lenox, MA K Newby Gallery in Tucson, AZ and Elisa Contemporary in NYC.
Statement
I am inspired by the beauty and patterns found in nature, and by mark making in organic ways. I like to use unconventional tools that make organic and unpredictable marks when I paint, but at the same time I like to have a degree of control over my composition. I make one mark, then evaluate the piece and make another. For me, this is a study in the balance of chaos and control. The paint reacts to the marks that I make, and then I in turn react. In this way, I am able to create a piece that is intentionally beautiful but also very organic and energetic.
I am also interested in adding depth and dimension to my artwork, and have experimented with this in several different ways. In my Sanctuary series, I created three dimensional marks which I layered on top of one another in a shadowbox frame. In my Gaea and Breathe series, multiple layers of acrylic paint and epoxy resin combine to create artworks that are full of depth and mystery.
