What Once Were…Sandlot Dreams 14 x 21 Pastel on 400 Grit Uart 8 Ply Board
Lazy Summer days filled with the scent of fresh cut grass carried on a warm breeze, cicadas sing their hot day song, while the clicking of baseball cards in spoked wheels wind through neighborhoods. A screen door creaks open and slams to the call “I’m going to the park” to a parent calling back “take your brother!” Greetings exchanged between long time friends and bubble gum stuffed into cheeks, as well-oiled gloves are yanked from handlebars. Chosen sides, two stand off from the others knobbing up to see who bats first. Beneath cobalt skies, young children assume the identities of heroes named “Yaz,” Rico, “Say Hey” and “The Mick”! They think of playing in cathedrals named Fenway, Yankee Stadium and Wrigley. They dream and play ‘til streetlights come on, when Summer Days fade to Autumn chill, and youth becomes a memory. They’ll stand with fingers wrapped through chain link fence before heading home to family and hear the echoes of young voices flutter by on fading light and remember what once were…sandlot dreams.
