Six Gentlemen by Jean Lee Cauthen

Contradictions abound in this large, vibrant painting.
This artwork seeks to evoke harmony out of chaos. It is a favorite theme of mine as I depict a surface covered with energy and vitality while also conveying calm and tranquility.
The large scale replicates childhood endeavors to build “forts” in the woods. A place of both comfort and magic. Without providing a horizon line or indicating sky, the trees seek to ‘envelope’ us.
The green-hued organic shapes suggest a shifting, mysterious world contrasted with the framework of the trees. Strong, yet flexible.

Six Gentlemen
Jean Cauthen
The 14th C Chinese artist, Ni Zan inspired my many woods interiors with his spare and eloquent “Six Gentlemen,” portraying six trees along a riverbank. The trees were a metaphor for the principled and virtuous men who stood upright against an era of violent upheaval and foreign occupation. I contrast his own obsession with sparseness against my version’s chaotic field; A space that feels more reflective to today’s world.
