Jean Lewis is a lifelong resident of the Chicago area. She earned a B.S. in Art Education from Northern Illinois University and her M.A. from Governors State University.
She taught art at the elementary and high school levels for over 30 years, retiring in 2010.
Since then Jean has been creating her own art and showing in galleries and venues in the Chicago area. Her award winning art primarily consists of pastel works, but she also enjoys working in oils, acrylics and graphite. Still life art and portrait/figurative pieces are her subjects of choice. The still life is a genre that can take on any mood that the artist desires depending on the content and choice of colors. Showing light and how it effects color in these pieces is also very important in her work.
Jean's figurative and portrait pieces complete her body of work in a big way. A lifelong fan of figure drawing, she fills sketchbooks on a regular basis in Life Drawing sessions, or as part of her daily activities. Her portraits are usually from source photos, but she finds it enjoyable to draw or paint from life also. Her most recent figurative pieces have been created from the theme fathers and children. The first in this series was "The New Baby," with 3 more that followed. These emotional pieces draw us in as the father interacts with his children, or the kids with each other. Jean is looking forward to creating more pieces in this series.
. Jean resides in a suburb of Chicago with her husband and son, and works out of her home studio.
