A portrait of the wife of NC proto-blue banjoist Dink Roberts; Lily. She is depicted performing a dance she described as "Rabbit Hip, Rabbit Hop, Rabbit Bit the Turnip Top". The Robert family lived in NC in relative obscurity but was recorded by a group of folklorists/anthropologists in the 70s with well-meaning intentions but with some problematic approaches to how they thought about the family. The focus of their notes and film was mainly on the Men of the family who they described as unpredictable and aggressive. Lily was noted as Handsome due to what they perceived as "masculine" clothing. I wanted to honor this woman in a way she had not been before; with a portrait that draws attention to what she liked to do outside of care for her family and that was dance to her husband's banjo playing.
