“Between Posts” extends my series on people in motion—figures walking streets, paths, and, here, a dock—each journey framed by the places that guide and hold us. The title carries a double meaning: she moves literally between the weathered dock posts while, figuratively, she scrolls between posts on her phone, a private stream of moments unfolding in her hands.
It is an overcast day, and that muted sky is part of the story. The soft gray light flattens shadows and quiets color, holding the scene in a present-tense pause. Under this even wash of light, time feels suspended—no glare, no drama—just the steady rhythm of steps on wood. That hush allows distant possibilities to appear: boats resting in a pale haze, an island softened at the edges, and the idea that beyond the cloud cover the sun is waiting. The overcast becomes a threshold in itself: a veil that both grounds her in now and points toward a clearing ahead.
I composed the pier to narrow toward a subdued horizon, a corridor that suggests direction without certainty. Her slight head tilt and lifted arms reveal the unseen phone; the stillness around her makes those gestures intimate and contemporary. Color does the emotional work: cool blues and grays for reflection; the warm browns of the posts keeping time with her progress; hints of light on the water as a quiet promise.
This painting is about thresholds—the spaces we pass through and the spaces we inhabit online—and about moving forward even when the day is dim. “Between Posts” pauses inside that in‑between, where present calm meets future brightness, and each step carries us closer to sun.
