Hello everyone,
First of all, I am Janet Herman. I create reproductions of my textile art in my home studio.
In a former career, I worked in the publishing and printing industries. Creating a printed product from my photography and creating reproductions is a natural expansion of my work in fine arts.
For me, those hundreds of artworks I created over the years remain relevant to me in digital files. The joy and satisfaction that comes with reproducing a copy of my original work, even from years ago, emerge again when printing a new reproduction.
For everyone else, I create reproductions to make my work available to anyone interested in owning its likeness, if not the actual original. As expressed to me at art festivals, quilters like them for inspiration towards their own free motion sewing projects. Others, for the same reason most buy reproductions: they look real enough from a few steps away and are affordable.
To clarify, my original artwork includes acrylic paint, fabric medium to bond paint to cotton with heat set, white cotton, quilt batting, cotton backing and embroidery thread. The stitching that quilts the fabrics together also expands the design, color, detail and texture. This enhances the sculptural aspect.
A photographic digital file at high resolution is critical to capturing much of the 3D effect experienced when seeing the painted and stitched textile artwork with your own eyes. The printout is extraordinarily realistic, however, I apologize that the quality is diluted by viewing it on a monitor.
The Creative Process
With a megapixel camera capable of high resolution and Photoshop, I am able to size printout dimensions, straighten and fix any skews; and correct lighting or color in the image.
Printing
My Canon inkjet printer has produced excellent results for the past 7 years. I previously tested a printout from the same digital file used for my printer against commercial giclee printers. I'm confident my printouts are equal in appearance, if not better. Canon has longevity standards for its inks. My quality papers are from Red River. My finish is Moab Desert Varnish UV lacquer spray.
Processing
Reproductions are signed, numbered and titled with editions from only 5 to 25. While some reproductions are shipped rolled, I do have a stock that are matted and ready to be framed. That will be explained in each description.
Handling your reproduction from Janet Herman
If you order a reproduction shipped rolled in a tube, when received, carefully slide it out with the glassine paper it's rolled in. Unroll face up and lay flat with glassine paper on top. Weight down with books. You may choose to trim the piece to fit in a frame without a mat or glass. Store stock size mats may be available for you. Or, you may have a framer make a mat to fit your frame and provide backing.
If the reproduction you order is matted, it will be boxed and shipped flat. I will do my best to package it well enough to prevent any attempts to bend and mutilate.
Terms of Sale for Reproductions Ordered Online
I accept credit card transactions through PayPal.
The price shown for unmatted, rolled reproductions includes domestic shipping (typically USPS), to USA locations only. For matted reproductions, actual cost of shipping will be added to your invoice prior shipment.
Upon receipt, if you are not satisfied and want a refund, I'm asking you to return-ship the piece within 7 days, in the same packaging and pay the shipping. Upon receipt and inspection, I will refund your original purchase to the original credit card and credit your return cost against another purchase. If the item was not as ordered or obviously flawed by me in some way, I will also refund your return shipping.
REMINDER NOTE: Reproductions are created on paper, not fabric. They are a printed image and not stitched.
If the mat in your order is damaged in shipment, my first option is to send you a new mat. A second option may be to reimburse you my charge for the mat sent you.
My goal is that we are both satisfied with our transaction. My phone number is included in the shipment.
