Jane Elizabeth Cullum
I'm a full -time painter based in the beautiful countryside of the English/Welsh borderlands.
MessageI was born near London and spent my teenage years on the Isle of Wight.
After university in the UK and Canada, I enjoyed a rewarding career working as a speech and language therapist and also as a dance-movement therapist, painting in whatever spare time I had.
I now paint full time, and my work is influenced by time spent travelling, camping and walking in the beautiful landscapes of New Zealand, Scotland and mainland Europe.
I currently live on the English- Welsh borderlands where the ancient and mystical landscape provides continued source of inspiration.
I exhibit regularly and my work has found its way into private collections as far afield as Scotland, Sweden the USA and Peru!
I'm always delighted to hear from people who are interested in my work, so please get in touch if there is anything you would like to ask.
You can see a full portfolio of my work on my website (link above).
Thank you!
Statement
My work is inspired by my travels and my love of the changing light and weather over land, sea and sky. I like to paint without too much pre-planning and to let the initial images emerge during the painting process, which I then gradually refine and develop more consciously. I tend to use acrylic paint as it allows me to work quickly and vigorously- its fast drying time means I can overlay the paint and scratch/ rub the surface to build up layers of texture in quite a spontaneous way, though l also love using watercolour for the translucency and delicacy of the pigments.
I am currently exploring the use of natural materials, such as sand, natural inks and dyes, charcoal and rust in order to create work which has as little negative impact on the planet as possible.
