James Joel Holmes creates artworks that attempt to depict the unusual times in which we exist.

Expansion and innovations in science, technology and biology — the interconnectedness of all living and mechanical things, with a dash of whimsy, a splash of irony and a healthy amount of unconscious blather.

Born in 1974, James grew up on a small farm in Vernal, Utah where he used to build club-houses, play in large open fields, abandoned barns, and go foraging for wild asparagus with grandma.

His family moved to Salt Lake City when he was about 10 years old. He attended several different elementary, jr. high, middle-school and high schools throughout the valley, as his family moved around a lot.

He did some charitable work in Kenya, East Africa in his early 20s—an experience that shaped him profoundly and influences his work to this day. He spent many years working in print shops and eventually found his way into graphic design, audio and video production, photography and animation.

In his late 30s he rediscovered a core passion for creating art with his hands. He’s been working on art obsessively ever since.
