James Clar’s poetic reflection on artworks as remnants of legacy is rendered through a light installation that mimics the way that light fell on Anito in PICC at sunset on the day Arturo Luz passed away. The solid modernist monument is transfigured into an ethereal play of light and shadow.
This artwork reimagines Arturo Luz's iconic sculpture, Anito, using 3D modeling to create a visual marker of time. Using online solar calculation tools, the precise arc of the Sun on May 26th, 2021—the day of Arturo Luz's passing—was determined. Then, the 3D model of Anito was positioned in rendering software to emulate the lighting conditions that occurred during the sunset on that significant day. This render determined the color filters used in the artwork's LED lights. Through this process, a snapshot of what the sculpture experienced that day, when its significance increased, is created.
This piece is about the idea of legacy. The artifacts that one leaves behind. The stories and memories that are collectively shared to recreate the memory of someone no longer existing. Legacy begins, when the being ends.
