Life enlarged. Molecular vibrations. Exploring the most miniscule fragments of the universe. This is what I do in my art practice.
This was one of the paintings in the series about and inspired by wine and the ‘waters of life’ or ‘Aqua Vitae’. Here lighter red wine varietals came into their own. Wine making on a micro level where all the science and microbes get to work. Then wine making on the macro level with grape forms, glass shapes and colours. The vivacious colour and layers upon layer of process and history and art and of sensual enjoyment.
Such a joy to look into the lush characteristics of wine. The generous warm tones on the palette and on the eye. The richness, generosity and depth. And then looking into the glass from above, the jewel of light coming through the colour, the wave of the swirl. I could go on forever about the richness of these experiences and the layers of history, but the pleasure is in the painting and the glass.
Anecdotally the grey ovoids you see in this painting came from my friends experiment with wine fermentation in these beautiful concrete egg shaped barrels from France. After a visit to his winery I found these so adorable and quirky they could not help find their way into my painting.
