Fontainebleau is a 2,800-acre park located on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. It is bordered on three sides by water – Lake Pontchartrain, Bayou Cane and Bayou Castine. The park was named after Bernard de Marigny de Mandeville's large landholding that he named after the beautiful forest of Fontainebleau near Paris.
Fontainebleau's diverse ecosystem has a multitude of bird habitats that is enjoyed throughout the year by the inhabitants of the Northshore. This park has been a part of my life since I was very young. I love riding my bike along the Tammany Trace, my favorite cycling path in the area, that runs on the northern edge of the park. And when I feel so inclined, I will string up a hammock amongst the park trees to enjoy a good book or just soak up the atmosphere.
