J. Vadala is a self-taught mixed media artist whose art reflects themes of survival, transformation, and emotional release. Following a fatal car accident in 2017, she was forced to confront the strength between breaking and becoming. Inspired by her daughter, she turned to painting as a way to rebuild her identity and reclaim personal strength.
While her work is rooted in instinct, Vadala uses music as a driving force in her creative process. Rhythm shapes the atmosphere of her studio as she moves with the sound, waiting for the right moment of release and then the first mark is made. Her work carries a raw, unfiltered energy, layering tension and vulnerability to reveal an unapologetic truth.
Unpolishing the true version of resilience, the kind full of contradiction - she transforms suffering into clarity. Using abstraction as her language of endurance.
Vadala invites viewers into a space of personal interpretation, one that encourages reflection, healing and growth. Balancing restraint and release, chaos and control, as that is the strength it takes to survive. With her journey she views both art and trauma to be similar, reflecting that darkness may not always disappear, but it can change form. She wants others to embrace the power of their own story and know that authenticity is power. This belief is rooted by her new guiding philosophy she lives by: Unfiltered. Unbound. Free.
Statement
From the boldest cries to the softest melodies, each piece I create is a raw expression of emotion. Music is just one part of the honest healing that defines my creative identity. After a fatal accident in 2017, painting became more than a creative outlet, it became a way to survive the lasting physical and emotional impact of trauma.
Inspired by my daughter's pride, my work reflects transformative power of self-expression. Through painting, I learned to move pain, sorrow, and struggle toward moments of peace, clarity, and insight. What begins as chaos often evolves into something unexpected - a reminder that even in our darkest moments, transformation remains possible.
There is no formula, only instinct. The canvas becomes a place of confrontation and release, where nothing is softened, only exposed. Through textures, movement, and contrast I explore the battles, the emptiness, and fear that often goes unseen. All deeply personal, all to create, and yet universal enough to invite viewers into their own reflections.
I am drawn to the space between rupture and renewal, the moments when we bend but do not break. Each stroke carries raw emotion, acknowledging what I cannot control while honoring the beauty that can emerge from adversity. My work exists between darkness and light, destruction and growth, chaos and control.
My intention is not perfection, but connection—to turn what is deeply felt into something visible. Though I cannot return to who I was before, I have rebuilt myself through artistic exploration. What began as survival became my method, my mantra, and my philosophy: Unfiltered. Unbound. Free.
