J. Patrick Bowman
The Dalles, Oregon
My expressionistic collage style utilizes color, pattern, movement, and texture to evoke emotion, inviting others to participate in the story.
MessagePatrick Bowman’s journey as an artist emerges from the lush landscapes and community roots of Maple Valley, Washington, where he spent his formative years surrounded by the entrepreneurial energy of his parents. Growing up in a tight-knit circle of friends and the rain-shadowed beauty of the Pacific Northwest, Bowman’s relationship with creative expression began early—a thread that wove itself through every chapter of his life.
Encouraged from the outset, Bowman’s initial explorations in art were informal, often dabbling in music and photography throughout his late teens and twenties. When painting, writing, and even landscape design later caught his attention, these disciplines became a kind of toolkit for a life spent quietly absorbing the world’s textures and rhythms. A doctorate in Religious Philosophy underscores his thoughtful approach, yet his artistry remains defiantly self-taught, developed by continuous trial and error rather than formal instruction.
Bowman’s creative renaissance arrived in his late sixties, marking a return to his artistic practice with vibrant new focus. Early work often featured the straightforward beauty of nature—landscapes, floral studies, and water scenes—a testament to the enduring influence of his Pacific Northwest origins. Over time, his vision evolved towards abstract expressionism, a genre where his intuitive process and innate sense of wonder now freely flourish. For Bowman, every piece begins with a single color or form, opening the door to an organic, improvisational journey until his discerning eye declares the composition complete.
His artistic sensibilities are deeply informed by both the Canadian Group of Seven and the explosive energy of abstract expressionists and impressionists, whose work taught him to see and interpret the world anew. Yet what makes Bowman’s work distinctly his own is the curiosity to invent—to keep looking, to keep experimenting, to see the familiar anew. His process is iterative, a dance between impulse and refinement, always reaching towards something just beyond articulation.
Bowman’s recent involvement with the PNW Collage Collective and his participation in the NO/STALGIA juried group show at Vancouver’s Art in the Cave Gallery in April 2025 herald a period of public recognition for his deeply personal practice. His quiet commitment to art continues to leave its mark, appreciated by those who sense the meditative inquiry at the heart of every piece.
At its core, Bowman’s work is a reflection of his belief in the eternal creative force that animates both nature and humanity. With every canvas, he seeks to bear witness to that generative energy, reminding us that the role of art is not merely to capture the world’s beauty, but to engage with the deeper currents that sustain it.
Statement
My work explores the contrasts and similarities in color, form, and line to create pieces that invite the viewer to look deeper and experience more. Through collage, I layer elements—both seen and unseen—to evoke visual movement and balance, crafting compositions that can feel either soothing or unsettling.
I rarely begin a piece with a clear destination in mind. Instead, I engage with the work, allowing it to unfold and reveal itself over time. I continue to work until my eye is satisfied, trusting intuition to guide the evolution of the scene.
My inspiration springs from the creative spiritual force inherent in both nature and humanity, and the natural beauty of my surroundings in The Dalles, Oregon, in the midst of the spectacular Columbia River Gorge. This energy fuels my process and connects me to the world around me.
Technically, my collage practice is both destructive and constructive. I draw from many fragmented sources, reassembling them in unique ways that tell a story or evoke a feeling through my hands. It is this interplay of disassembly and reassembly that defines the distinct character of my art.
Thank you for viewing my work. I am honored by your interest!
