I've recently been loaned this amazing horse skull... and this is my first painting of it. I completely resonate with this quote from Georgia O'Keeffe, when asked about her paintings of skulls, and the assumption she must've been fascinated with death. She responded, "It never occurred to me that skulls have anything to do with death." She went on to say, “To me they are as beautiful as anything I know… . The bones seem to cut sharply to the center of something that is keenly alive on the desert.”
