Welcome! I grew up throughout the west and southwest of America, and have learned to see the distinctive beauty of our world no matter where I find myself.
MessageOne of my reasons for making this particular painting, and others in this series, is that I want to draw our attention towards these kinds of things—objects as well as people—which are vitality important to our everyday lives, but generally go completely unnoticed. By painting these objects, I'm saying that they are worthy of our notice, worthy of our attention, and of our nurture.
I'm drawn to the shape of the thing; it's mechanical quality. I'm drawn to the contrasting materials of porcelain and metal; it's rough and the smooth textures. I'm drawn to the shadows in the threaded section. All around, I just think spark plugs are kind of cool looking. While this particular one no longer has any spark to power an engine, it's working well as a model in my studio.
