This painting presents the viewer with the following hypothesis: the source of discomfort that may be perceived within a restless mind can be found when carefully looking for unnatural connections between what is evident and what is perceived. The resources used to sustain the idea presented as a leitmotiv in this piece (mythological marine creatures, the water, floating ) invite to allegorise the underwater as the space where one can take a deep dive into the realms of comprehension.
The main characters in Underwater Roleplay are two mermaid looking creatures, floating and in calm interaction with each other. They seem to be looking at something that is out of reach, mesmerised, while grabbing each other’s attention. They are subtly intertwined, but in an unnatural fashion: despite evidently female in appearance, one characteristic, a third arm in each one of them, serves as the element of union between them, but also as an unsettling, creepy even, element. Starfish that are floating all around, organisms that absorb nutrition and expel residue from the same orifice, frame the scene, while stuck to bubbles that serve them as vehicles.
