IAN CLEMENTS

Ian Clements is a contemporary painter based in Engelberg, Switzerland, working primarily in watercolour and charcoal. His practice centres on landscape and figurative subjects, developed through a process of sketches, photographic reference, and memory.

Working from these sources, Ian Clements reconstructs scenes that sit between presence and dissolution. His work is concerned less with depiction than with perception — how light, atmosphere, and human activity are retained, edited, and re-formed over time. Forms are reduced, edges remain unstable, and images emerge only provisionally, reflecting the fluid behaviour of the medium itself.

Alongside his landscapes of Central Switzerland, Ian Clements’ figurative works explore moments of quiet observation and distance — figures held within shared spaces, often defined by posture and relation rather than identity.
