Thank you to Clifford Brooks for the generous donation of this work.
The first question one may well ask when looking closely at this work is: Why are the standing angel figures all are robed and white, while the sitting figures are unclothed and brown? This appears to echo racist stereotypes. Yet, the artist was a well-known advocate for Social Justice. So, what could this work have been created for? What is the explanation for the choice of subjects? Context matters, and such context is lacking. The work was discovered long after the artist, and all who knew her well, had died. If anyone has data related to the creation of this work, or wishes to comment on this work, please contact the Foundation Art Collection office at 201-360-4007. We are interested in bringing to light serious discussion of troubling art, and we welcome comments. Thank you.
