When artwork has controversial aspects, this can nurture fruitful, informed, and active discussion about history, about change, and about progress.
This artist was an ardent worker for social justice in her time. Looking at this with a modern gaze, viewers question why the Saint's skin color is light and the Devil's is dark. Was the artist was unconscious of the impact such an artistic choice would make on viewers? Would an artist with a liberal political orientation make the same choices about skin pigment today that this artist made over 50 years ago? What do you think of this work? All comments and discussion points are welcome. Please contact the Foundation Art Collection at 201-360-4007.
