The Iroquois were a group of five Northeast Woodlands tribes that formed a democratic confederacy over 500 years ago in what is now America and Canada. This red velvet beaded bag in a floral design with a glazed cotton lining and a pale green silk ribbon binding appears to have been made from a British Revolutionary War uniform (circa 1810). This work has been mentioned in the following literature: Cherished Curiosity: the Beaded Bag in Haudenoosaunee Art (2012); Made of Thunder, Made of Glass; American Indian Beadwork of the Northeast catalogue (2006). Thank you to Dr. Jonathan Klarsfeld for the generous donation of this work.
