The shape of the earrings was inspired by the metal tines or keys of the Mbira, a traditional musical instrument of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. Unlike the tines of the Mbira which are hand-forged in metal, these shapes were 3D printed in stainless steel.

These earrings are part of ongoing experimentation with design and production methods that combine the use of 4IR technology and hand-manufacturing techniques to produce contemporary jewellery.
