Henk Weijers, born in 1959 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, is currently based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After decades in the corporate world—an environment shaped by rules, procedures, and external expectations—he turned to painting as a deliberate move towards independence. Traces of that structured background remain visible in his work.

His paintings move between geometric abstraction and expressive figuration, exploring the tension between structure and freedom, discipline and impulse. Through this approach, he examines how order and intuition can coexist on the same surface.

Weijers works primarily with high-quality heavy body acrylic paint on small to medium-sized canvases. His earlier works are characterised by structured abstraction, where expressive paint handling is contained within clear geometric frameworks, emphasising colour relationships, flat shapes, compositional balance, and spatial clarity.

In more recent paintings, expressive figuration becomes more prominent. Landscapes, architectural elements, and spatial settings appear, guided by rhythm, colour, and composition rather than descriptive realism. Instead of recording appearances, Weijers constructs a visual field in which gesture and structure interact.
