Multidisciplinary visual artist exploring stillness, material, and the quiet tension between presence and absence.
MessageHelena Palazzi is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Kingston, New York. Born in Sweden and educated in Italy, her work reflects the meeting of two distinct cultural sensibilities. Growing up in Sweden, she was shaped by a culture that values restraint, balance, and quiet observation, fostering an early sensitivity to subtle shifts in light, atmosphere, and presence. She later moved to Italy to study at the Academy of Fine Arts Pietro Vannucci in Perugia, an institution influenced by the legacy of Arte Povera. The program emphasized conceptual thinking, material exploration, and a freedom from traditional hierarchies of medium and technique. This environment encouraged an open, process driven approach to making, where raw materials, experimentation, and the idea behind the work held equal importance to its final form. This experience marked a shift in her practice, expanding it beyond technical execution into a more intuitive and investigative process. After more than two decades working internationally as a photographer, primarily within fashion and commercial contexts, she gradually returned to a more introspective and process driven fine art practice.
Statement
Growing up in Sweden, I was always captivated by the powerful stories and characters found within Norse mythology and folklore. These tales spoke of gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures who embodied the forces of nature and the complexities of the human psyche. In my art, I strive to evoke the essence of these legends, bridging the gap between ancient tales and contemporary expression.
Through abstraction and textured layered paintings, I weave layers upon layers of paint, graphite, pigments, marks and symbols and I explore the ethereal and otherworldly aspects of my cultural heritage; channeling the energy of the sagas and the spirits of the natural world and thus creating a visual language that resonates with ancestral echoes.
In my artistic process, I embrace experimentation and spontaneity, allowing the canvas to guide me on a journey of discovery. I allow the paint to flow, mix, and interact, uncovering hidden layers and unexpected narratives. The resulting compositions evoke a sense of mystery and wonder, inviting viewers to embark on their own personal voyage through the realms of myth and imagination.
Living in the Hudson Valley, surrounded by the beauty of nature, has further influenced my artistic practice. The mountains, meandering rivers, and lush forests of this region evoke a deep connection to the Scandinavian landscapes of my upbringing. They remind me of the cyclical rhythms of life and the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world.
In my art, I seek to honor the ancient wisdom and traditions of my Scandinavian roots and by delving into the depths of Norse mythology and merging it with the beauty of the Hudson Valley, I hope to awaken a sense of curiosity, enchantment, and reverence for the timeless stories and the enduring spirit of humanity.
In essence, my work is an invitation to reconnect with our ancestral past, and a celebration of the enduring power of myth and tradition in the modern world. Through my art, I aspire to transport viewers into a realm of enchantment, where the past and present intertwine.
A continuing exploration of stillness, material, and space.
