Heather Duris
Lawrence, Kansas
I am a painter living in Lawrence, Kansas, and working in oils, acrylics, linocut printing and jewelry. I am inspired by the landscape of the Flint Hills.
MessageI am originally from Independence, Missouri, and served in the US Army as a Multimedia Illustrator from 1996-1999. I then graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and served four years on active duty as a Chemical Officer. On completion of my service, I returned to the University of Kansas and graduated in 2007 with a BFA in Painting and a minor in Art History. Since then I have raised two daughters with my husband, established a personalized jewelry business, as well as a fine art business.
Statement
Have you ever wanted to unzip your skin and let your spirit out to play? Or have you ever felt so desperate to escape your current circumstance that you wished for an out of body experience? When I deployed to Kuwait for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, I stood in the desert, looked up at the sky straight above me and wished that I could transport myself out of that wasteland of simultaneous terror and boredom. For me, art is that Great Escape. I want my artwork to transport the viewer to a different place. A place of peace and rest. Take a step with me, engage your imagination and feel free.
