Born to Dutch dairy farmers in LA, lived life cross-culturally, especially in Africa , now pursuing my first love, making art.
MessageThis painting is one in a series of six 3' x 4' paintings of African kitchens. The climate is too hot to cook indoors. Better in the breeze, especially with the fire! The corrugated aluminum probably served on a roof until it leaked, and then was put to use in the kitchen--to block wind from putting out the fire, or to dry things on, off the dirt. There may well be some 'attieke' under the overturned basket, wrapped in banana leaves. The iron support for the pot is a local and much needed product.
My mother had this painting hanging in her den for years, and got lost in thought looking at it. She made three trips to Africa to visit me and my family when we lived there--always with great enthusiasm and curiosity for a world so different than her own.
