Born to Dutch dairy farmers in LA, lived life cross-culturally, especially in Africa , now pursuing my first love, making art.
MessageLong ago, I set off on life full of vim and vigor, hoping for fun and adventure, my three children in tow, cuter than dumplings. I was ready to help the world—whatever that took.
It took me to places I never expected:
It took me to places I never expected:
To a year in Neuchatel, Switzerland learning French over chocolate and fondue with trips to the Alps.
To a village in the rain forest of Côte d’Ivoire so remote the people had never seen a white woman before I arrived. And in true rainforest fashion, the rains lasted a week at a time.
To another village where mediums tranced out to call on spirit beings to solve life’s challenges. Chickens were killed and thrown into the air, hoping they would land in a way that indicated the spirits had accepted the sacrifice. Powerful amulets protected people and crops from harm.
I learned how to analyze unwritten languages and I even discovered some crazy features of the language we were learning–amazing systems once you crack the code!
And then, things fell into place for me to do a PhD that tied all my interests together: cross-cultural communication and understanding the Bible from a world view very different than my own. A happy union!
After that, a long chapter of my life was all about helping traumatised people in remote locations heal from their ‘heart wounds’ and help others heal.
And now, I’m an artist, and still waiting to see how this piece fits in with everything that has gone before into a coherent, beautiful whole.
