Janet Gallup was a printmaker and painter based in Michigan. She was considered one of Ann Arbor’s most successful artists, her work has been exhibited extensively around the Michigan, the Midwest and the US. She was considered Michigan’s leading printmaker, and she more more than 36 exhibitions in her career. Her prints are in extensive collections throughout the Midwest.

Janet Gallup grew up in Detroit and raised her family in Ann Arbor, where she passed away in 1991 at the age of 67 of cancer.

Gallup graduated from the University of Michigan School of Art (now called Stamps), and was an instructor at the Michigan Guild. She was represented by both the Troy Art Gallery, the Craftsman Gallery near Traverse City, the Tamarack Gallery in Omina, and the Ann Arbor Art Association. She was awarded the distinguished Annie Award in 1991.

Her work is notable for its incredible technical skill, rich and complex imagery with many layers and fine details. Janet sometimes used as many as 50 separate screens in one work, perfectly registering works with four deckled edges, which is a rare and challenging technique. She began with a painterly monotype to create color gradients and had a command of portraying light and color with mat, opaque printing inks. Her works richly describe people, places and natural cycles, in monotype, serigraph and a painterly combination of these. The Janet Gallup Memorial Award has been awarded for decades annually during "The Print" exhibition at the Ann Arbor Art Center, which showcases the diversity of printmaking techniques used by Michigan artists.
