I’m Andrew Gunnar Norquist, a Providence based artist creating detailed graphite drawings of trees, landscapes, and wildlife.
MessageThe Olive Tree of Vouves, one of the oldest living olive trees in the world, stands as a symbol of endurance, nourishment, and the deep interconnection between nature and human history. In my graphite drawing, I aim to capture the tree’s gnarled and twisting trunk, its ancient form shaped by centuries of wind, sun, and cultivation. The intricate textures and shadowed crevices of its bark tell a silent story of survival and adaptation, reflecting both the passage of time and the resilience that defines life itself.
Beyond its physical form, this drawing is an exploration of the Olive Tree of Vouves as a living witness to history. Estimated to be over 2,000 years old, it has stood through civilizations rising and falling, wars, migrations, and cultural shifts, yet it continues to bear fruit. The artwork becomes a bridge between past and present, inviting contemplation on the relationship between human existence and the natural world.
Graphite, with its ability to convey rich depth and subtle tonal variation, is an ideal medium to express the contrast between permanence and impermanence. The monochrome palette emphasizes the tree’s sculptural quality, allowing light and shadow to reveal the patterns of age and growth. Just as olive trees have been cultivated for their fruit and their symbolic significance, this drawing seeks to cultivate an awareness of the quiet strength embedded in nature.
