On April 15th, 2013 at 2:49 pm, two separate bombs went off near the finish line of the Boston marathon. The bombs killed 3 and injured several hundred. The bombing was planned and executed by brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. During a shootout with police, Tamerlan was killed and Dzhokhar escaped. Dzhokhar was later found injured and taken into custody. He is now on death row and awaits his execution in a supermax prison in Florence, Colorado.
The small physical scale of these drawings is meant to bring attention to the grand scale of these events, both physically and in their lasting impressions on our national psychology. There are a few defining moments in each generation’s collective memory that we all remember, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the assassination of President Kennedy, 9/11. These drawings explore that national collective experience in small meditative vignettes.
