Stocking Up: Douglas Squirrel with Douglas Fir Cones
- Colored Pencil on Grafix drafting film
- Margaret Trent
A native of the Pacific Northwest, the Douglas Squirrel (or Chickaree) lives in conifer forests. They are hoarders, collecting cones and fungi for later consumption. The squirrels remove the cone scales to get to the nutritious seeds. A pile of these scales in the forest indicates a nearby squirrel “larder”.
