Greta Krueger is a self-taught artist, working primarily in oil on canvas. Greta’s work is abstract, often boldly colorful and expressive, referencing the natural world, about which she is passionate. Her particular canvas preparation, along with extensive layering of paint, bring her paintings translucence and depth of color. She has a love for experimenting with all matter of materials, from paint and ink to metal smithing. Greta’s experience as an art gallery director and interior design assistant led her to starting her own decorative painting and restoration business in 2004. A love of languages and antiquities inspired her to study gilding under Carlo Martelli at Oro e Colore School in Florence, Italy. For the last several years, Greta has been focused on her work as a visual artist, painting in oil, ink, and gouache, from her studio near Broad Ripple in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Statement
The focus of my creative work is oil painting on canvas, as well as painting with ink and gouache. I am inspired by the natural world, and usually include plant life, water, stones, or other earthly elements in my work. My paintings are abstract, and often colorful. I believe nature is the ultimate sanctuary; the further we remove ourselves from its rhythms, the more unbalanced we become, as individuals and as a society. I want to engage the viewer in an emotional response to nature (tranquility, joy, peace, wonder) to create deeper connection.
