MessageGregory is a watercolor artist from Lewiston, Maine, who began painting over 2 years ago at the age of 67. He is self-taught and started by watching a Get Set Up beginner's watercolor course, after which he continued exploring the art world. Using various YouTube tutorials, Gregory has practiced different techniques and styles to develop his approach to painting.
He focuses on everyday subjects using a range of colors and brushwork. His paintings often include landscapes and abstract themes. Gregory intends to sell his paintings and prints at local craft fairs. Each painting presents a narrative, and he plans to connect with viewers through his work while continuing to participate in the art community and advance his skills.
Gregory gets immense satisfaction watching his paintings dry and come to life, often viewing the composition at different orientations to find the best view for presentation. Therapeutic.
Statement
I paint with watercolor on 12x9-inch paper, letting colors and strokes blend naturally as I work. After the first layer dries, I add more color, using scraping and tilting for texture. I regularly step back, rotate the painting to view progress, and choose the most promising orientation before adding final details. My approach to detail uses quick, confident brushstrokes, scraping, and occasional water for unique textures, rather than precise realism.
